Since we last released our collection of FARS (The Fatality Analysis Reporting System) data they have updated their data to include 2016. We’ve added this data to our collection and are making it available to everyone. We’re providing all FARS data from 1975 to 2016 in a single easy to use download.
First off the data: you can download the bicycle only data set here, and the full data set is located here. As always, be aware that we’ve combined every year into a single table, so if you want to join the ACCIDENT and PERSON tables you’ll need to join on both st_case and `year. And don’t forget that not all columns will have data for every year.
Overall 2016 continued the trend of increasing fatal accidents, both in absolute numbers and in terms of miles driven. The US saw 34,439 fatal accidents in 2016, compared to 32,539 in 2015. This corresponds to a fatality of 1.18 per 100 million miles driven for 2016, compared to 1.15 for 2015. Cyclists saw an additional 871 fatal accidents in 2016, an increase of 19 accidents from 2015. The top five states for cyclist fatalities remained the same: California, Florida, Texas, Michigan, and New York. California saw the largest increase in cyclist fatalities over taking Florida for the most fatalities.
